So you've got questions? We can answer the ones about seitan, as for questions about other stuff? Well you might need to keep looking for those......

  • What is Seitan?

Seitan is a combination of several ingredients: vital wheat gluten flour, specially selected seasonings, herbs and spices, water and oil. Once mixed and kneaded together, a spongey, springy dough is formed. This is then cooked to create a high protein, plant based wheat meat. The wheat gluten flour in Quick Mix Seitan is sourced from high quality wheat, and our quality seasonings and natural flavourings have been carefully selected and sourced to create a perfect Seitan Mix.

  • How do I make Seitan?

Using our all natural, all delicious mixes you can make seitan, by simply emptying a pack into a bowl, and mixing with water and a little oil. Then simply steam, bake or simmer depending on your preference. We recommend steaming as this retains the most flavour and results in the nicest texture. Easy to follow preparation and cooking instructions are on each packet, so you can't go wrong.

  • How long does it take to make and cook Seitan?

From opening the packet to removing your freshly steamed seitan steaks from the steamer it can take just under 40 mins if you are in hurry – 5 mins of preparation and kneading, 25 mins of cooking. Easy Peasy!

  • What do I do with my cooked Seitan?

Slice it and eat it just as it is or slip it in some sandwiches.

Pop it in the fridge for satisfying midnight fridge raids for chunks of juicy yumminess.

Pull your seitan steaks into tasty shreds, marinade and flash fry to pop them inside a delicious pie.

  • How long will my cooked Seitan keep?

Pop your cooked seitan in an airtight container in the fridge and, depending on your level of self-control (not much of it our house when it comes to seitan), it will keep fresh in your fridge for up to 3 days. If you’ve still got some left after 3 days, you need to seriously question your commitment to seitan…..

  • Can I freeze my cooked Seitan?

Of course! We recommend freezing in portions according to usage. For example if you regularly cook for two, freeze in quantities of two portions etc etc. Bulk prepping can be an excellent timesaver. Just remember to defrost whole frozen seitan steaks thoroughly before cooking. If you have flaked or pulled your seitan prior to freezing, the heat from cooking will disperse through the pieces quicker so it can generally be cooked from frozen (depending on the size of your flaked/pulled pieces).

  • How much protein is in Seitan?

Our Quick Mix Seitan contains a whopping 32 grams of protein per 100 gram serving!

  • Where does Seitan come from?

Seitan has a long history and is documented as forming part of every day diets in China, Japan, Vietnam and other Asian countries since the 6th Century, commonly thought it may have been invented by Chinese noodle makers around this time. There is evidence of wheat meat or wheat gluten being utilised in recipes in the west in since the mid 18th century. However the name seitan is believed to have been coined in the 1960s by a Japanese Philosopher, George Ohsawa when he introduced it as a mock meat option in line with his macrobiotic diet. With the advantage of a more satisfying 'bite' when compared to tofu and tempeh, the popularity of seitan with those following vegetarian or plant-based diets has experienced a surge in recent years as more and more discover its delicious, juicy goodness.
