Seitan and beyond....

Okay, so it'll come as a shock to most of you that there are other things besides seitan to be thinking about. I know, it's hard to imagine that once you've tasted the juicy, satisfying bite of this versatile mock meat that you will need, or want, to think about anything else. But sometimes, it just needs to be done. So let's talk about other stuff for a little bit, like proper grown-ups.

With more and more people in the UK adopting a plant-based lifestyle, the demand for versatile meat, dairy and fish alternatives has never been higher. Many of the ‘big’ brands and supermarkets (Tesco, Asda and Sainsburys all have extensive own brand vegan options) have started to release their own versions of vegan friendly; mince, burgers, sausages, steaks, fillets, shreds, cheeses and, the list goes on. As long time Vegans, this is something of a double-edged sword. We happily applaud the progress this signals for plant-based lifestyles as a more accepted, main-stream option.

But, we are acutely aware that there are hundreds of smaller, independent, vegan owned brands, just like Quick Mix Seitan, all working hard to make ethical and sustainable choices every day both in business and personally. Most, if not all, of these vegan businesses operate on much smaller budgets than the likes of say Richmond Meat Free Sausages, Quorn, and Tesco Plant based etc.

The smaller businesses deserve our support. Their core values are our core values – animals are not food or resources, and our planet deserves better. I think it’s fair to say, that the ‘big’ brands are generally not motivated by a compassion for animals but rather the recognition of a growing, profitable demographic of ethical and/or health conscious consumers. Or in other words, the money you choose to spend with ethical independent brands, carries on supporting cruelty free, sustainable choices long after it’s left your wallet. The same cannot generally be said for the bigger brands.

Here at Quick Mix Seitan, we want to put our money where our mouths are, so to speak, and support our fellow small independent UK based ethical brands. So, we’ve compiled a list below of just a few of our favourites; covering off vegan friendly beer, award winning plant based cheese, dairy free confectionary and cakes, and zero waste cruelty free cleaning products. Links to their websites are included, so please go and check them out. Support small independents by supporting their ethical & sustainable products:
